The car manufacturer Daimler, sponsored research in the arid parts of India in 2004. Their findings and that of their partners are listed here in what became known as Oil from a Wasteland - The Jatropha Project in India. With permission we host their six part story of this nut that grows in arid regions, is poisonous to humans and even wild goats but plentiful in oil and is revitalising areas that have been semi desert for years. These pages are in pdf format.

Today the Jatropha bush, often used by the early Portugese as a useful hedge to keep stock in, is being grown to produce oil that can be refined to produce enough biodiesel to drive a car from one side of India to the other. A distance of 5,900Kilometres.
