World Solar Challenge - Subject Guide

Vocational Education Training (VET) Course

  • The World Solar Challenge fits in with several components in a National Qualification working with TAFE SA.
  • In the first instance discuss with your school's VET Coordinator the possible structure of subjects you can study at school.
  • TAFE SA is prepared to assist you and your teacher with additional knowledge that is particularly relevant to the workings of Kelly. Some of this training could be at Regency Campus.
  • Please ensure that TAFE SA, through Barbara Workman, Manager, Youth Pathways & Partnerships and the Energy Education Australia organisers are aware of your selected program.
  • To ensure competency and unit accreditation can be achieved, please negotiate with Barbara Workman, TAFE SA’s Youth Pathways & Partnerships Manager, your unit selection before commencement of any unit being linked to the World Solar Challenge.
  • Energy Education Australia Cert IV TAA members will assist where-ever possible.

SACE Flexible Learning

The World Solar Challenge will enable students to access a range of Flexible Learning options. There are subjects like Integrated Learning that are designed to help you package your new knowledge and skills that will provide you with Stage 1 or 2 subject level credit. You could also use Self-directed Community Learning. This means having an interview to discuss what you learnt through your participation in the Solar Challenge. Another possibility is to complete the St. John’s Senior First Aid Certificate and Family Care course and so automatically get another SACE unit.  The VET courses you do could also count as SSABSA-VET subjects at Stage 1 and 2 level. This will be dependent upon the negotiations with TAFE SA.

For all students involved in the Secondary Schools Combined World Solar Challenge, several weekends will be required where students from different schools will need to work together in preparation for the event.

Each student will need to be in excellent health and fitness for the event. A healthy diet prior to the event is essential and guidelines will be given mid year to follow to ensure that each participant's fitness and physique is ready for the ten days of a grueling, challenging but enjoyable experience. To that extent the Australian Institute of Sport guidelines for road events will be closely followed.

In the near future additional course material will be listed here so please come back soon.
