The word industrial can refer to many areas.
To do this topic justice we need time and more importantly help.
No matter how many areas we cover there will always be a section of the industry that we have overlooked. It will not be intentionally but an ignorance you could say on our part, so help we need from you to correct our error.
At this stage we have a few topics we can offer you.
Electricity is a topic that many of us are concerned over with the national grid working wonders one day and not so good another. Much talk about new power stations has been aired recently with some believing nuclear is the answer, others looking for a more green approach. What ever you thoughts, at this stage we are able to link you to wind and solar power.
- Consistently strong winds.
- Low impact on native flora and fauna.
- Sparse settlement and previously cleared farming and grazing land.
- Close proximity to the electricity grid.
The two wind farms we have permission to share with you are in South Australia near Cape Jervis (Sawfish Hill) and Cowell (Mt Millar) both being connected to the national grid. While sawfish has been operational for several years and was the first wind farm in South Australia, Mt Millar is relatively new only being completed during January 2007.
STARFISH HILL - while at this site check out Miller the Quiz Kid on how a turbine works. Miller is courtesy of the Danish Government and Tarong Energy Corporation based in Brisbane. Miller will explain with working diagrams each part of a wind tower including all its major sections. Definiterly worth a visit. If you would prefer a brief explanation how the project was completed from beginning to end with consultation with the local community to the connection to the national grid click on this link - starfish_hill.pdf (728KB) - full of photos and explanations. MT MILLAR - The Mt Millar site (about 7 kms long) is situated on an escarpment between the towns of Cowell and Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula. The land is presently used for sheep grazing and cropping and has been leased from four families who have worked the land for several generations.
The site was selected for a wind farm because of:
Other sites worth visiting (English version) if you are the technically minded are: ENERCON VESTAS both world leaders in the manufacturring of wind farms and suppliers of parts for them as well.
A solar site we can also share with you through the courtesy of the Department for Planning and Infrastructure of the Western Australian Government is located at KALBARRI north of Northhampton on the coast. Owned by Western Power Corporation, it is the first large scale grid connected photovoltaic plant in Australia. This site allows you to see numerous photos around the plant which you can click on to see an enlarged version.
Verve also have information about the Kilbarri area that was experiencing drop outs in supply until solar plant was built. Their story can be found here.
We will be building on this page later this year, so if you have any suggestions please send them to us at info@energy.edu.au
